Site Description: This site is located on the eastern side of Roger Williams Park, near the intersection of Edgewood Ave, Beachmont Ave, FC Greene Boulevard, and Bartlett Ave. It’s classified as a sand filter, which is a low grassy depression that fills with stormwater during rain events. Stormwater enters the site through four different curb openings: two on Edgewood Ave, one on Beachmont Ave, and one on FC Greene Boulevard. If the sand filter is not working properly, the stormwater will flow past the curb openings and into the storm drains. The storm drains then empty into the Roger Williams Park ponds without being filtered or cleaned. Inside the sand filter, the soil and grass act as a natural filter to clean pollutants from the stormwater. When the sand filter reaches full capacity, excess stormwater drains through an overflow structure located within the basin. After a rainstorm, the captured stormwater should be absorbed into the soil within 24-48 hours.

Photo-Video Tips: To take photos or videos, stand near the curb cut openings on Edgewood Ave and FC Greene Boulevard. Capture footage of the stormwater flowing through the curb cut openings into the sand filter, and verify that it is not flowing into the storm drains. Additionally, you can take footage of the stormwater in the sand filter itself. These shots will help confirm that the system is working properly.
